Creating a Swashbuckling Pirate Outfit

Dressing as A Pirate

Arrr… Wish that you could look like a fearsome pirate? Well, there are plenty of real pirates to steal some style from. We are grabbing the style of some of the most famous pirates to ever sail the seven seas and helping you to create a fearsome, swashbuckling pirate outfit inspired by them.

Keep in mind that when it comes to building your pirate look, you can go as fancy or not so fancy as you like. There were a wide range of pirates and privateers during the Golden Age of Piracy, and we are merely taking inspiration from a handful of them.

Pirate Clothing Basics

To start, let’s look at some tops and bottoms. A white or cream-colored shirt is always a solid choice for a pirate as such shirts were popular amongst sailors in general. One pirate, pirate captain Calico Jack, was named for wearing calico, which is a coarsely woven fabric made from unbleached cotton. Pair that shirt with a pair of pants, or skirt if you prefer. If you are taking inspiration from a couple of the most famous female pirates, Anne Bonny and Mary Read, then you will want to go for longer pants. The book General History of the Pirates describes both Anne Bonny and Mary Read as wearing long trousers.

Coats and Vests for Pirates

Once you have your top and bottom picked out, then you can move on to outerwear. Wearing layers was common at the time, and pirate captains were no exception. Coats and vests or waistcoats were pieces commonly worn by pirates. This is also a great place in your historical pirate costume for you to choose how fancy or not you want to be.

While some pirates such as Anne Bonny came from more humble roots, other pirates or privateers were far wealthier. Privateers were sailors given permission from their respective crown to take down enemy ships during wartime. For example, if the English were at war with only Spain, then an English privateer could take as many Spanish ships as they wanted but they couldn’t take any French or Dutch ones.

Many pirates were originally privateers, and Henry Morgan was one such privateer. Henry, through a series of events, would eventually become Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. If you want to take inspiration from this famous pirate turned politician, then a more noble or wealthier look would be ideal. Also, red or crimson was a popular color for some pirates, while a brown, grey, or black coat would also make sense. The General History of the Pirates would describe Bartholomew Roberts as wearing a rich crimson damask waistcoat and breeches. Red was definitely his color.

Adding to the Pirate Look

Of course, no pirate captain should be without something covering their head. Bandanas and tricorn hats are the most depicted ones in the media and for good reason. Tricorns were highly popular during the era. Pirates such as Blackbeard and William Kidd wore one. Meanwhile, Anne Bonny and Mary Read would wear bandanas or handkerchiefs on their heads, according to the General History of the Pirates. Thus, either would work well for a fearsome pirate look. You could also wear a colorful sash around your waist for a pop of color.

To complete your outfit, make sure that you are wearing the right footwear. Long boots are ideal. We have a range of boots to choose from. Buckled details add a nice touch and are great for those fancier pirates.

Pirate Weapons

Beyond hats and boots, pirates really should have some way of taking down sailors on ships. Which direction you go with will depend on the goal for your costume or outfit. Steel swords are best suited to reenactments or in scenarios where extra care is taken regarding their handling. Meanwhile, LARP swords as well as replica guns can be fun cosplay or costume additions, especially for Halloween events. We sell a variety of replica flintlock pistols, which were a favored sidearm for pirates and regular sailors alike. The pirate Blackbeard is described in the Second Edition of A General History as wearing “three braces of pistols, hanging in holsters like bandoliers”. Thus, having multiple replicas would be appropriate. Don’t forget to have a place to put them.

Maybe at this point, you are liking your pirate costume, but you feel that it could use just a bit more pizzazz. You could always add some jewelry. Bart Roberts wore a gold chain with a diamond cross hanging from his neck. Thus, history coincides with pop culture.

From Blackbeard to Anne Bonny, there are a lot of pirates to look at for costume inspiration. The ones mentioned here are just a handful. You might prefer to pick another pirate like Ching Shih and that is totally fine. What does your historically inspired pirate look like? What is your character’s name? Have fun creating your own swashbuckling, pirate captain costume and enjoy your seafaring adventures.
