Displaying excellent craftsmanship, the Blackened Markward Cuirass consists of a breastplate and backplate connected with leather straps. Rivets add detail to the front and back, matching the dark metal finish of the plate armour. The steel cuirass is designed to go well with other medieval armour, especially our Markward-style pieces. We recommend wearing a gambeson or other padded arming wear with this torso armour to maximize comfort. The metal cuirass works well for LARP events, re-enactments, and Renaissance fairs, making it a great choice for warriors and collectors.

You might find it a little short if you have a very long torso, but it was just about right for me at the last few strap holes. Looks great when matched with the markward tasset belt. Pretty light and comfortable. Wear it with a gambeson for maximum comfort.

i am so happy with this armor . the fit is great and to get a front and back set at this price is amazing ! very comfortable and allows almost unrestricted movement for me.

  3. ryan_cortes (verified owner)

The armor fits nice and sits very well so as not to weigh on you. Combined with the matching gorget and shoulders it felt amazing. No restriction on movement and there’s no weird rubbing anywhere.

  4. Zachary Allbaugh (verified owner)

pretty good, i have room to move and it feels light and goes well with the gorget. bunch of rust when i got it, though it was all on the inside of the chest piece and came off fairly easy so not any big deal

For the price point, this is a perfect starter armor piece. I am tall and broad, and this fits me very well, after putting on my gambeson. The black finish can look a bit messy on the inside, but once it’s on it looks uniformly black.

Pretty good, mine was a riveted a little off but not enough to be noticeable or bothersome. Short enough that you can wear it the proper way (above your navel). the backplate is actually articulated a little bit which is nice. Really doesn’t restrict your movements at all.

While it looks great with the rest of the set, it is versatile enough to blend with other looks as well. Swiss pikeman, conquistador, Landsknecht, you are good. Adjustable to most body frames and rigid enough to take a solid hit.

As far as durability and comfort goes, it’s a fine piece. Nothing too fancy but it’s easy to put on and adjust and doesn’t have the “flimsy” feeling associated with lower grade steel. As another reviewer said, the length of the piece is on the shorter side (which was great for me because I have a shorter torso).

That being said, the “blackening” on the outside appears to be a simple coat of paint. The inside of the armor appears to have been painted by hand and covered with some kind of gloss seal (not really sure why they wouldn’t just spray paint it instead). The outside paint job on both the front and back pieces had scratches in it by the time I received the package.

This isn’t really a deal-breaker for me because I’ve been wanting to get into metal coloring/painting and this is a good practice piece, but be warned that it may not look amazing out of the box.

I saw that some other reviewers mentioned their pieces being asymmetrical/crooked so I measured mine to be sure. There were some very mild discrepancies (like the distance between the right shoulder and the base being about 1/10th of an inch different than the distance between the left shoulder and the base), but absolutely nothing noticeable or particularly bothersome for mine at least.
