Rapiers, like other swords in other eras, were subject to unique twists too. This Swept Hilt Flamberge Rapier, for instance, combines the classic hilt of the dueling civilian sword with a thinner wave-blade borrowed from the flame-bladed zweihander. Surprisingly, the combination was a successful one, as the undulations of the wave-blade created a more effective parrying blade, one that caused unpleasant vibrations in an opponents sword and caused an attacking blade to catch and slow on every crest of the wave-blade. This rapiers wave-blade is hand crafted entirely in high-carbon steel, and it possesses a more rounded tip and a long ricasso. The wave-blade also offers a diamond cross-section, which keeps the blade stiff and lends it surprising strength. The hilt is more iconic of the classic rapier, possessing a swept hilt design of twisting and curling quillons that create an elegant and intricate, yet nigh-impenetrable cage that is appealing to look at and difficult to pierce with a blade. The grip is wrapped in leather and inlaid with red wiring for added appeal, and the hilt is capped with a cylindrical pommel to finish off the swords impressive style and look. This Swept Hilt Flamberge Rapier is, above and beyond everything else, a truly distinctive blade, one that will surely draw attention to whomever might wield it, as well as catch the eye of many, whenever they enter a room where the bare blade might be visible.

I must admit, I was not very enthusiastic about the Kris blade. This wavy, semi-fanciful looking, snake-like blade didn’t make very much practical sense to me at first glance. I did a bit of study into the blade’s design and purpose, historicity, and practicality. Although the ‘flamberge’, aka ‘Kris’, aka ‘serpentine-blade’, (among other monikers), was not the norm, not the common, not the average, blade design through the ages–however it has shown up among the edged-weapon family since the start. Ancient cultures seem to have set a place aside for the flamberge blade in many sacred and holy ceremonial functions. To this day the blade design is still present, on sacred daggers used in various pagan and Wiccan ceremonies. This Swept Hilt Flamberge Rapier is not the “fantasy” sword I mistook it for initially. This baby has intent and purpose, and is fully functional! The high carbon steel blade is flexible, but not “whippy”. The entire weight of the sword is a bit lighter than most of my swept hilt, shell-guard, and basket-hilted rapiers now in my collection. This is a cut and thrust sword. In a strong and solid thrust, the undulating shape of the blade is certain to open a wider wound; and on a glancing cut the serpentine blade will act as teeth on a sawblade, gaining purchase and depth in the flesh. The overall quality of the weapon is everything I have come to expect from Deepeeka; which is to say solid, well-crafted, and handsome. This Swept Hilt Flamberge Rapier is certainly handsome, a tad out of the ordinary, and it is worth the asking price by virtue of quality alone. A very solid addition to my collection of Medieval and Renaissance arms and armor. I endorse this sword with Five-Stars!
