This style of hat was more ‘headgear’ than ‘hat’ for most of the Medieval Period: as we see it in paintings, illuminated manuscripts, carvings, and statuary, from at least the late 7th Century Anno Domini, through the centuries, and even as late as the 16th century (specifically in priestly raiment by that time). There’s no great wonder in the style’s endurance; as it is straightforward utility. It generally covers all of one’s scalp; therefore, when woolen especially, it retains body heat in cold seasons, or climates. In ages when open flame is ever-present, the headwear protects from sparks, hot ash, or brush-by with open flame (such as a carelessly carried torch in a crowd at night), The garment was also a guard against various inevitable parasite infestations; such as fleas, lice, ticks, and assorted other vermin. Towards this iconic piece of clothing’s twilight era, we still see its form in ecclesiastic service. If my aged memory serves correctly; I believe Hans Holbein the Younger (Court artist to King Henry VIII) painted a portrait of Woolsey or another prominent priest, wearing a white linin version of this hat, along with other priestly regalia. I bought this woolen version for the Ohio winter, as it is warm and will cover my ears; but mostly because I am on a mission to bring all manner of medieval styles back in vogue. I also bought a ploughman’s hat (Robin Hood style) warm wool hat, for grocery shopping and church.
This hat is well made, and goodly sewn. Me likey! 5-Stars!!
