You have decided to head into battle to defend your kingdom. You choose to wear the Avant Helmet with Gorget to protect your head. Based on a popular design from the 15th and 16th centuries, this helmet comes with a matching gorget. The helmet features a distinctive design based on the real-life Avant suit of armour. At the top of the helmet, there is a short ridge down the front. It protects the top of the head and the forehead. On the back, this section forms a narrow strip down the back of the head. It has a rondel on the back. The skull area of the top section is 14 gauge mild steel while the rest of the helmet is 16 gauge mild steel.
Connected to the top are two cheek plates and a visor. The cheek plates attach to the top with hinges, allowing them to swing upwards. They also secure in place with a latch in front, near the chin. The visor attaches to the top with pins at the side. It also secures with a latch in front. It has a pin on the wearers right side for lifting and lowering the visor. There is a space between the top of the visor and the bottom of the top piece. This creates the slot for you to see out of. Underneath the visor, the top piece and the cheek plates create a larger, rounded opening. The opening has a cutout for the mouth area. Finally, the helmet has a leather chin strap on the inside.
Next, the gorget has two plates. One plate protects your neck and collar. The other plate covers the hinges on the helmet. This second plate helps to cover the lower half of the face. It has a small cutout for the visor pin. This gorget secures onto the body with a strap. The strap wraps around the back of the head. The rondel on the helmet helps to deflect blows away from the straps. The helmet makes a fantastic addition to a variety of medieval roles. Wear it to your next historical reenactment.
