According to Norse mythology, Aslaug was the third wife of Ragnar Lodbrok and the daughter of the hero Sigurd and the valkyrie Brunnhilde. Such a noble person requires a noble garb, a garment that has been recreated in the Aslaug Viking Coat. This jacket, based on those found at the archaeological dig at the Swedish Viking trading hub of Birka, fits loosely enough over the body to be worn comfortably with any Viking or medieval dress. Its sleeves extend all the way to the wrists, retaining body heat in the winter, but its open front, which can be held closed with a brooch, and its mid-shin length make it a great garment for northern summers, as well. The Aslaug Viking Coat comes in brown and red, and it makes a fantastic addition to medieval and Renaissance ensembles, especially those with a Nordic flare.

I bought this to wear to a reenactment event in November. It is a lovely piece. For reference I am 5’8″ and about 170 lbs and normally a size L. I sized up to an XL for a little extra room to layer things underneath. Also I hate when things are tight through my arms. I think I could maybe have gotten away with the L but am keeping the XL. It is a bit roomy in the chest but I am not very ample in that area so depending on one’s build that might be an issue to consider. Belted, this looks just fine. It is amazing quality, a very nice mid weight wool blend so I’m thinking it will keep me warm. I also think it could work as street wear if needed. I’ve been wanting a wool coat like this for a while to use at colder weather Ren Faires and I’m so glad I finally bought it. It goes well with the colors of other Burgschneider pieces. I”m not a huge red person but this is a deeper red, almost burgundy. It did smell considerably when I took it out of the package but after it’s been hanging on my mannequin I’ve noticed the smell has dissipated some. Very happy with my purchase.
