An excellent option for protecting yourself in battle, the Arthur Padded Gambeson appears in a sleeveless vest design. The medieval gambeson can be worn under many kinds of re-enactment armour to help prevent rubbing and pinching. The tall collar increases comfort around the neck, as well. The armour padding is stitched in a diamond pattern that allows movability and keeps the padding in place. The front of the padded gambeson is fastened with four buckled straps. Metal eyelets run along the edges of the arm holes and bottom hem of the sleeveless gambeson, allowing the addition of sleeves or tassets (sold separately) when extra protection is desired. This arming wear comes a variety of color options.

I purchased The Arthur Gambeson in an XXXL size and I was very impressed with it out of the box! I have yet to test it in the field (I fight in SCA) so I will have a follow up in a month or so. I can say that it is of quality construction, appears to be durable and is a lot thicker in material than it appears to be. I recommend this product!

I got the black in large and it was absolutely wonderful. The fact you can order the sleeves separate is an incredible thing because I have a larger torso to arm size ratio.
The gambeson was very comfortable and I cannot wait to wear it under my armor during a festival!

Very pleased with this Gambeson, it fits well, and looks great, my only minor complaint that I have, is that I wish there was another leather strap at the top of the collar, or perhaps a couple of lace rivets so that we could lace the collar closed, the collar is fairly tall and would offer ample neck protection if it could be held closed, but as is, it feels like it’s just missing that little bit, otherwise, great quality item and would buy again.

Great feel, excellent fit. True to size so it’s snug. Thick enough to provide good protection without being too bulky to wear under steel armors. Fittings are sturdy.

Got for a friend. Big on me so it should fit him good. I know my size was a little small on him. Came with leather cord to attach sleeves and tassets. Definitely much happier with the sleeves now that they’re matched up with the proper gambeson and I’m not dumb about it.

Nice thick padding, fits great. I was a bit worried of the large size being a little small, however it was perfect sized. Its short like a normal shirt which is exactly how I wanted it, plus ‘cut off’ at the shoulder which looks great with a tunic underneath it. Comes with the excess strings for when you buy the arms to the gambeson to tie them on.

A very high-quality looking gambeson that’s thick and soft. The leather straps were also very thick. It’s almost a shame to cover it in armor because it looks so nice. I also appreciated the tall, stiff neck collar.

I purchased the Arthur Gambeson in Medium size. I have a 45″ chest and this fit like a dream. The leather straps are adjustable and with my chest size, it was on the smallest notch. The quality seems to be really nice and the padding is great. It is a little bulky but the protection is worth it. The neck comes up high, it touches my ears and is very stiff. If you wear a chain coif, rested (face through hole) over this gambeson, it will look funny. I would still recommend this product!

Got the 3x in brown, and the thing is perfect, even a bit too big! I stand at 6′ 3″, and 270 lbs, and this thing is a perfect addition to my gear. Quite comfortable and non intrusive with the collar. Also, the straps in the front to hold it closed are made of good quality leather, so +5 to quality in my book. 10/10 would recommend.

NOT FOR STAB/SLASH PROTECTION, use only for costuming, this gambeson is two thin layers of fabric filled with stuffing, blades slash and go right through, unless you only plan on wearing this to the ren-fair, save up for something better

Right out of the box, this piece fit perfectly and comfortably. The neck comes up high enough that you could go without a mantle if you so chose to. Make sure to add at least 3 inches to your measurements for any armor you plan to wear over it, but if you do, you won’t have any issues. My cuirass fits just over top of the gambeson, only leaving a small gap on my sides. Will somewhat stop the impact of blunt objects, or at least take some of the sting out of blunt practice weapons, like wasters or synthetics. A great starter gambeson. Large bearded men be warned however, the top buckle will try and eat you facial hair.

I made the decision to purchase a size M based T. Sayres’ comment about this size fitting him perfectly; he being 6′-2” tall and 205 lbs. We are clones when it comes to these measurements but our shoulders must be much different. The sleeve holes are curiously tiny on my garment and they pinch terribly in the arm pits. Then there is A. Gimm’s comment about the good fit on his 45” chest. Mine is a mere 40-in but the garment is very snug – you cannot easily slip a hand under it when I buckle it. The sleeve holes measure 20”. For comparison, the sleeve holes of other vests I have (not gambesons) measure 24”. The chest and waist both measure 43″ (below or right at the lower end of the size chart). That explains the tightness on me. However, the size L Arthur Padded Gambeson is only 1.25 bigger in both chest and waist on its upper end. And then there is a big jump the the XL. So, I am a little perplexed, and trying to figure out with customer service what size to try next. Given that the return label cost $27.93, I rather not go through this again, or I might have to coin a new slogan, “Buy 2, get 1!” The quality of the garment seems solid and I very much like its look. So, I definitely want to figure this out.
