Traditionally, the parazonium was a dagger, but in this variant, it is more in line with the traditional gladius. This Roman Parazonium Gladius echoes the later designs of the blade, featuring an ornate form that is symbolic of worth and virtue. In the later years, the parazonium featured a leaf-shaped blade, and that remains true in the case of this short sword, as its blade possesses a wasp-waisted design with gentle curves along its edge, ensuring that it is wider near the tip then the middle. The wooden hilt features a squared guard, as well as a ribbed grip, allowing it to fit nicely into the hand, while the pommel is shaped like an eagles head, lending it a measure of glory and majesty, as well. Included with the short sword is a leather wrapped wood scabbard, which features brass fittings at both the throat and the chape. Historically, this Roman Parazonium Gladius would have not been a blade for battle, but more theatrical weapon, one that emperors, leaders, and legionaries would have favored when it came to rallying the troops. Now, it makes for a great costume sword and display piece, as well as a great way to signify your rank when you go to a Roman reenactment.
