The plain steel battle shields are hand painted for a smooth black finish and then sprayed with polyurethane to preserve the paint. The Plain Steel Battle Shield comes in a wall display version with a chain from which to hang it or a hand held, battle-ready version with heavy duty, 1.5-inch leather straps on the back. I ordered this for painting my family crest and taking to the ren faire, but this is much more than that! Solid, 16 ga steel. Thick enough to take a solid hit (or multiple), and thin enough not to bog you down for carrying all day. The straps are ambidextrous, which does make for an awkward carry, but a little woodworking or leather working skill and you can fix it right up. The straps are nutted on, so they are easily removed for modification or replacement. Ordering 3 more because as soon as my kids saw it painted, they wanted one too. Great product!

Ordered the wall hanger this time. Every bit the same quality fit and finish as the strapped shield. The finish it comes with is perfect for painting and protecting the steel. I used this to paint my family crest as a gift, and I also have the strapped version (also painted) for ren faire and reenactment. Amazing quality and one of the less expensive shields available. I highly recommend!
