It’s a spear! It’s a halberd! It’s a hook! No, it’s actually all of those things and more: it’s a Lochaber Axe! Leave it to the Scots to design one of the most iconic, effective, and bizarre-looking weapons of all time and this is what you come up with: a 16-inch spearlike blade with a sharpened edge on one side and a cruel-looking hook on the other, mounted on a 41-inch wooden haft. Used as a polearm to great effect by Scottish conscripts, the sharp edge of the Lochaber Axe was used in a chopping motion to cleave through opposing troops while the hook was employed — to great effect — to unseat mounted opponents. Our version of this unique Scottish halberd ups the ante with a forged high carbon steel head and a simple hardwood pole, evoking the simplicity and effectiveness of the original weapon.
