For the historical reenactor or competition thrower, the Iron Axe Wedge is ideal for keeping your axe in top shape. Axe wedges help to keep an axe head securely on the haft. They do this through forcing the wood to expand into the socket. This axe wedge is hand-forged. It has a thicker end and a thinner end. Traditionally, axe wedges enter into hafts narrower end first, allowing for hammering on the thicker end. This wedge has three grooves on one side, a common design feature for axe wedges. Add this axe wedge to your medieval reenactment or DIY gear.

These are interesting little wedges to write a review about. They are iron, and an inch and a half long. They have a distil taper to them, with one end being the thin-edge, which goes into the wood first, (at the top of the haft): and the thicker edge at the top of the little wedgie is for striking with one’s hammer to drive the wedge home.
The wedge has three deeply cut grooves (they go about halfway through the depth of the wedge), along the face of the wedge, centered between top and bottom edges.
I am extrapolating that these grooves can be used to cut the wedge at one of the grooves; if you do not need, or want, to drive the entire iron wedge into the haft ( because of the wood already being fully and tightly expanded with however much of the wedge is already driven into the wood), and up to one of the wedge’s grooves.
Not being a wedgeologist, I am not 100% certain that is the true purpose of the three grooves in the face of these wedges, but it seems logical.
The grooves must serve a logical purchase because these wedges would seemingly be easier to forge or cast without the grooves.
Then again, what the hell do I know about axe wedges?
At any rate, these little iron wedges are very useful if you have certain haft weapons in your collection: single-bit war axes, double-bit battle axes, long-hafted battle-axes, tomahawks, throwing axes, various hatchets, and some War Hammers as well. Hafted tools too, of various and sundry types.
I bought two of these wedges: one for actual immediate use on a Francesca axe I purchased which has a slight looseness to the axe-head.
The other wedge is to have against future need. These are very inexpensive, and extremely important if you have a loose axe-head.
I give these small utilitarian wedges a resounding 5-stars!
