I remember how shocked I was as a pre-teen to first learn about this type of chastity belt/device!
Nowadays in general academia, most historians will relate that these were another Victorian-Era “invention” that likely never actually existed, or was ever really used.
After delving deeper into the subject, I found a charming book authored by two ladies (Karen Harris and Lori Caskey-Sigety) entitled: ‘The Medieval Vagina’. This book is a delight to read, being both informative and humorous.
It has wonderful chapters on Chastity Belts; and Vagina Dentata; and hosts of other pertinent and relative subjects dealing with the vagina throughout the Middle Ages: low to high.
Incidentally, their research showed that chastity belts were actually employed, but mostly during and post Renaissance; AFTER the medieval period (no pun intended).
Now, seeing one of these in actuality, I have reassessed my initial shock as a youngster, and knowing human character as I do, I am wondering how these ever fell out of fashion?…just kidding, just kidding!
An excellent reproduction: the device is steel, and built well. The belt includes an adorable tiny padlock; which actually functions, and comes with two identical little keys.
The device has a brass brand-crest that says: ” Guaranteed Virginity Dr. Polasky’s Approved Chastity Protector”.
People have been locking up their valuables for millennium: this is a great commemorative relic.
