James Butler Hickok might have been one of the most famous folk heroes of the American Old West. Tales of his exploits are entrenched in western myth and legend and are celebrated by the Wild Bill Hickok Wood Display Plaque. James Hickok, better known as Wild Bill, was born in 1837 in Illinois, although he later fled to the Kansas territory to avoid being charged for an accidental murder. It was in the frontier that he made a name for himself, eventually serving as a scout for the Union, a lawmen, a famous gambler, and a renowned gunfighter. He died in 1876, in the town of Deadwood, in the Dakota territories. This plaque depicts what would have been Wild Bills favored pistol, an 1851 Navy cap and ball revolver with silver plating and ivory grips. Here, nickel plating provides the same gleam as silver, while the ivory grip is simulated. The pistol is held in place by spring-loaded, brass bullet hangers, which allow for the pistol to be easily removed, so that it can be handled for inspection and admiration from up-close. The actual plaque is a simple background of mild, light-hued hardwood that is been decorated with a Union States cap badge – a nod to Wild Bills time as a Union scout – as well as a picture of Wild Bill Hickok himself, taken in 1873. The final touch comes in the form of a brass name plate, which offers a few short details about the legendary Wild Bill, himself. The plaque measures approximately 18 inches long and 7 inches tall. With its great, ornate look, this pistol and plaque combination makes for a great conversation piece to have in your home, and in a pinch, the Wild Bill Hickok Wood Display Plaque would make for a great gift, especially to those who never quite lost interest in the cowboys and outlaws that ruled the Old American West.
