Ulfhild Steel Helmet

Made from 18-gauge mild steel, this Vendel helm comes in two sizes. This Viking helmet covers the top and sides of the head, along with the face. It protects the face with a plate that wraps around the eyes and nose in the style of a spangenhelm.

The face plate has wedge-shaped eye holes. This plate forms a point at the bottom center. There is a strip of steel that runs from the nose along the top of the head to the back. Rivets secure it in place.

In addition, this Nordic helmet has a pair of cheek guards. Each guard forms an angled L-shape. They have curved edges along the top. Raised lines adorn the face guard and cheek guards.

On the inside of the Norse helmet, there is a padded liner. The helmet secures onto the head with a black leather chin strap. The Ulfhild Steel Helmet makes a great addition to any Viking outfit or warrior costume.

Spangenhelm History

This Germanic helmet is based on the spectacle helmet, which was a variation of the Spangenhelm. This style of helmet was popular in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Part of its popularity stemmed from the fact that it was relatively easy to produce.

Its entrance into Europe was preceded by usage by nomadic Iranian tribes on the Eurasian steppes. While it was the most common helmet design in the 6th century, it would still be depicted in illustrations 700 years later in the 13th century.
