The Polypropylene Chinese Hook Swords take their design from a traditional Chinese weapon made popular elsewhere through videogames and film. To begin with, this pair of tiger hook swords features a polypropylene construction. Polypropylene makes the training swords durable enough for practicing swordplay.

Each training weapon features a long, narrow blade that ends in a hook shape. On steel versions of these blade, the edge would be to the outside of the straight lengths and the outside tips of the curves.

At the base of each blade, there is a grip. This grip has ridges for a more secure grasp. In addition, there is a crescent-shaped blade that faces outwards and protects the hand. Past the grip, the hook swords end with spearpoint tips. These Chinese swords are ideal for any sword practitioner or martial artist looking to practice their skills.

Just got them in today and while they are perfect for my needs, I do have some concerns with the price.

    Pros:
The pictures don’t do justice to how good these look. The blades have blank edges to look like sharpened edges while the rest are filled with a leaf pattern and the grips are stylized to look almost leather covered and have a little Taiji symbol at the base of the blade.
They are relatively thin compared to my Cold Steel polypropylene hand-and-a-half sword, and much lighter as a result. I fact the first thing I noticed was how light the box was.

    Cons:
Being as thin as they are, the plastic did arrive bent, specifically the smaller spear tips.
They don’t feel durable enough to trust to full impact sparring.

Overall I bought these to have and play around with and for costumes and cosplay so their looks and weight really shine through for me. That said, the Cold Steel sword I have is about $39 on amazon and on sale currently here for $35.91.
Seeing as these are sold as a pair for $71 here not including shipping and $91 on amazon with free shipping, I can’t say that these are worth the same indovidually as the cold steel sword as far as construction goes.

They are good looking and will be perfect for my needs, and on top of that I got them with the summer discount plus am extra 20 off from points I had.
The fact actual competition hook swords for martial arts, that are made of steel, go for half the list price of these was a big point of hesitation for me, but since I needed training weapons for conventions, I’m happy with the discounted price I ultimately paid, but wouldn’t suggest them at full price unless you absolutely need them as a costume piece.

I’ve waited a few months before posting this review, as I wanted to make sure that the swords performed well and could withstand repeated dueling, and I could not be happier with their performance. Their thin blades make them very easy to use (though they are slightly top-heavy for my taste), while still maintaining remarkable durability. I wouldn’t use them in anything above moderate-intensity dueling, but below that, you should be fine. I’ve also had them used against me, and with light armor I can take a multitude of hits before it starts to hurt. I can hook them both on a tree branch, swing back and forth, and they hold my weight without any bending, deformation, or scratches; I’m willing to bet that they could hold ~ 160lbs/73kg before permanent damage occurs. The blades do seem vulnerable to twisting forces, so keep that in mind when trying to hook and control a large opponent. Because the swords are made of Polypropylene and don’t have a sharp edge, you can’t get a solid bind on your opponent’s weapon, but hooking into their gloves, armor straps, and limbs is still a very easy and effective thing to do. The only critiques I have for them is 1. The hilt daggers are slightly too large/exaggerated, as they can contact the forearm and elbow pretty easily. 2. The handle is too narrow and the finger grips are too far up and apart, making the swords difficult to grip unless you use a decent pair of leather gloves.
I would recommend the Polypropylene Chinese Hook Swords to anyone who doesn’t want to pay the full cost of metal versions, or is looking for a more unique and niche weapon to wield.
