Whether you like to roleplay as a monk or wish to dress up as one from the past, the Chartreux Monk Habit is a great choice for you to wear. This medieval monk outfit has five pieces. The set of cream-colored garments includes a robe, scapular, mantle, hood, and a cord belt. All of the pieces are cotton.
Starting with the robe, this full-length garment has a rounded neckline and long sleeves. Traditionally, as pictured above, the scapular lays over the top of the robe. It is similar to a medieval tabard or surcoat in that it is sleeveless and open at the sides. It also has a rounded neckline.
Then, the mantle covers the shoulders, while the separate hood covers the head. The hood has a pointed shape. Finally, the rope-like belt wraps around the waist and has knotted ends. This style of belt has the name of cincture de Chartreux.
This medieval religious costume is ideal for historical reenactments as the outfit is a replica of the original medieval outfits. You can also easily wear it to a Ren faire or LARP event.
Chartreux History
The Chartreux or Carthusian Order was founded in 1084 by Bruno of Cologne. This religious community is one of hermits and is fairly austere. It is a highly devout group of monks and nuns. The name stems from the Chartreuse mountains where it first originated. An alcoholic cordial is produced by the monks and retains the same name. The orders name would also lend itself to the English charterhouse.
Please note that this item is made by hand from natural materials. Therefore, it may vary slightly from what is shown above.
