Beautiful looking axe! It came sharp, well oiled, & well protected from Medieval Collectibles. The end of the shaft had a scrape or a gouge on it that went deep enough to go past the stain in the wood. I don’t feel this will cause any problems other than in appearance. I have not put it to the test in actual real-life situations, but just from holding it, you can tell it will perform nicely. Even if the shaft were to fail, the axe head is too high quality to let it go without one for too long. It feels great in the hand, but two hands are definitely required for precise control of this gem. As a display piece, it does not disappoint, either. It would be a pretty nice gift to yourself to have one for work & one for show.

Quality! This is truly a utilitarian axe, designed for everything from clearing brush to limbing to butchering. The head has a flat, thin (yet sturdy) bearded blade made for slicing or chopping. Where it attaches to the handle , the head opens in a wedge shape with a squared box for the handle hole. Unlike a woodcutting axe, this axes handle is squared like a military axe, making control of the angle of a blow precise. The handle appears to be a hickory or possibly oak, but definitely a sturdy hardwood that is pinned to the head, not wedge set. The weight and balance of this axe is like I have rarely seen before and it handles like a dream. My only complaint is that the handle is a little too thick near the base, but a little sanding will fix that right up. Also, the base is nearly 2-1/2” wide, so I’m not sure if an axe frog (ring type) would work well.
As far as durability goes, don’t be afraid to use this one for it’s intended purpose. As someone who heats his house with wood, I had to try it out as soon as I got it, and it will cut a tree down quick. I am thoroughly impressed!
