A modern interpretation of the 17th century English mortuary hilt sword, the Man at Arms English Backsword is fast and lively in the hand and a sheer delight to use for training. The single-handed sword feels nimble and strong. Able to land a decisive blow even when cutting fast from the wrist, the functional sword is crafted from 1055 high carbon steel with a mild patina for an antiqued finish. An elegant basket hilt ensures that the historical sword stands out in any collection. The mortuary sword is fully sharpened and comes with an ornate black leather scabbard with steel fittings. This high carbon steel blade makes an excellent Renaissance weapon for HEMA practitioners and historical re-enactors.

I am not typically a fan of Cold Steel when it comes to historical swords. However, this version of the “Back Sword” is absolutely stunning. While it is a tad bit on the blade heavy side, it still feels well balanced in the hand. It is definitely a wicked slasher. The full basket is well executed and artfully crafted. The grip is very positive with its ray skin cover and wire wrap, but you may want to wear a fencing glove as it tends to be a little rough on a bare hand. The antiqued patina finish is very nice and lends to the image of an aged but practical weapon of war. I chose this blade as my main sword for my 1680’s to 1720’s era pirate character.
