Every soldier in the Roman army was expected to carry a shield. Like the Spartans before them, Romans tactics utilized shield-wall formations, creating almost impenetrable barriers made up of these iconic square Linen Covered Roman Wooden Shields. This shield, also called a scutum in Roman terminology, is not your typical Greek shield, which were traditionally circular in shape. This shield is square-shaped, in order to defend as much of the upper and lower body as possible. It features a concaved shape that curves subtly around the holder and allowed nothing to get past when interlocked with others, while also featuring a brass metal boss at its center, which helped to shrug off blows from attackers. The shield features a red face with polished brass edges, as well as yellow-gold arrows and wing-motifs sprawling out from the center of the shield. A linen covering across its wooden surface serves to enhance its look and its durability. This shield measures approximately 42 inches tall and approximately 32 inches wide. Carry one of these Linen Covered Roman Wooden Shields and you will get mistaken for an ancient legionary, even if you are not wearing the armor. Of course, this shield would also make quite the handsome display if hung on a wall and admired from afar, too.
