The proliferation of plate armor across Medieval Europe was shadowed by the development of crushing weapons like this war hammer. Since swords were virtually useless against plate armor, mounted knights used short hammers, axes, and maces to defeat an opponents improved protection. This beautiful, impressive weapon is replicated from an example in the German National Museum in Nuremberg. The steel head is secured to the hardwood shaft with steel langets. Brass tacks provide a more secure grip.

I bought this hammer to hang on the wall in my game room. Most of the weapons that are already hanging there are practical, functional weapons. I have been involved in both sport fencing and historical sword play since 1988. This hammer fits right in. It is a solid, well built and handsome weapon that feels right in your hand. I will buy another hammer (probably the 14th century Italian hammer) to hang on my wall as well. After all you can never have to many war hammers.
