Not all swords of the Civil War were cavalry sabers, officer swords, and their like. Blades of all shapes and sizes were used and favored. This CSA Richmond Arsenal Sword is based on the straight short swords that were favored by artillery teams. Its design is highly reminiscent of the gladius, and for good reason – it was designed for use in close quarters, near to heavy artillery, where stray shots might result in errant ignitions of powder stores, which meant that a big, unintended explosion could be pending. This decorative arm has a straight, short blade with a fuller down its length, and an ornate cast-bronze hilt and grip. The letters CS are embossed onto the short guard, while the swelled hilt has spiral grooves to provide a secure and solid grip when wielded. The tip of the pommel is adorned with a single star. Included with the sword is a matched scabbard, wrapped in black leather and outfitted with brass furnishings on the chape and throat. For those looking for something new to add to their Civil War collection, arms like this CSA Richmond Arsenal Sword are not common, and it doubles over as a great costume piece for reenactments and such, especially if you are planning on manning a cannon.
