Our reproduction Follis of Constantine I was struck between 306-337 AD and shows the laureate bust of Constantine on the obverse and a military gate with guard on the reverse, which suggested public security at a time of unrest. The Constantine I Follis is held in a clear plastic blister and is supplied on an information card, with a full color image on the front and historical information on the reverse.

Constantine the Great was the first emperor of Rome to become a Christian. He was made joint Emperor of Rome in 306 AD. In 312 AD, he fought and beat Maxentius, the other Emperor, at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge on the Tiber River. Three years later, he built the Arch of Constantine to celebrate his victory. In 330 AD, he completed the city of Constantinople (now Istanbul) and made this his capital and the center of Roman government. The hippodrome was a place for horse and chariot races. The Roman Circus Maximus in Constantinople was the largest Roman hippodrome and seated about 250,000 spectators.
