Aventails are for protecting the sides of the face and part of the neck. The Chainmail Aventail with Dagged Edges is a great option for this, made of 18 gauge steel rings riveted together in a traditional 4-in-1 style. A 4-in-1 pattern consists of four chainmail rings woven through another ring. The flat rings are 8 millimeters in diameter, and they are riveted using a wedge method for durability. The bottom edges of this chainmail have a dagged pattern that will add extra interest to your ensemble. Historically, aventails bolstered the coverage of helmets, attaching to their sides and back. Perfect for light reenactment, LARP, and costume use, this steel ring aventail makes a great addition to the looks of knights, rogues, Viking warriors, and more.

Wear this chainmail armour over one of our medieval arming caps and mantles for greater comfort and safety.

  1. nils.olson (verified owner)

This is a nice aventail that is fairly easy to put on the bottom of a helmet if you have a leather punch. You will need to punch your own holes. It is best to start at the back and work around both sides to the front to ensure it fits evenly around the helmet. The rings are a little bit lighter in color than the picture looks. Rings are riveted for extra strength.

This is a pretty good aventail. The leather is pretty thin, but if you have access to thicker leather, you can make your own repairs later on.

Definitely use a leather punch to put the holes in and start from the back of your helmet. It was a bit big on Bascinet SKU#MH-H0993 , but I was able to make it work.
