The Bellator is very similar to our keno shinais in weight, balance, and length, so it was a fairly easy transition to the Bellator. We were skeptical about “foam” weapons having come from kendo, HEMA, and traditional European fencing. So we researched these carefully and watched reviews and demos by various YouTubers before buying. They’re great! They’re obviously not as stiff as a shinai or synthetic HEMA sword (which really hits like a club!). But nor are they wet noodles as we feared before doing our research. They’re stiff enough to bind and parry without overly flexing. But they’re not so stiff that they pose a serious threat of injury in the absence of heavy protection. We fight with these using Shapur Gambesons, HEMA or kendo gloves, and head protection in the form of HEAM fencing masks, but we hit harder than most LARPers since we’re coming at this from a fencing angle rather than LARP angle. If doing lighter LARP swordplay, you could easily forgo the protection. These also survived full contact with our metal armor, so they’re definitely quite durable too!
