Frequently Asked Questions

What Kind of Shoes Did They Wear During Medieval Times?

Here are some of the most distinctive and controversial shoes from the Middle Ages:

  • Pattens: They looked like clogs or shoes with raised platforms and were worn over regular shoes to protect the latter from mud and dirt. Men and women wore these protective overshoes.
  • Poulaines: The term poulaine can mean the shoes themselves or their pointed toes, such as long-toed ankle boots. The nobility, particularly the men, wore them as a symbol of status and leisure. Some toes were so ridiculously long that they were banned or their lengths regulated under sumptuary laws.
  • Turnshoes: These leather shoes were created inside out and turned, resulting in their name. The soft-soled slip-ons were widely used during the Middle Ages and recreated in modern times, such as Viking turnshoes.
  • Boots: Men across social classes wore this kind of footwear. Boots appeared in various lengths, as noted below, and were fastened using laces, buckles, and buttons.

What Kind of Boots Did Men Wear in the Middle Ages?

Men and sometimes women wore their boots low or high like up to the thigh and knee:

  • Ankle boots were primarily used for work.
  • Hueses referred to high leather boots that reached the thighs or soled hoses.
  • Estivaux were short boots described as soft and lightweight.
  • Brodequin referred to laced boots that ended at the knee or calf, although they may have been initially the stockings worn inside boots.

Women may have also worn some of the boot styles mentioned here.

What Were Medieval Boots Made Of?

Boots were made of leather and fabrics, like estivaux. The quality of leather for the footwear did vary. Wealthy people would have their boots embroidered, fur-lined, and colored, among other additional tweaks.

Did Medieval Peasants Wear Shoes?

They usually owned a pair of footwear that served practical purposes, like working in the fields. Medieval peasant boots also reflected sumptuary laws that dictated the norms of fashion and ornamentation among social classes.
